How to Turn an STL File into a 3D-Printable Mold

A practical STL-to-mold workflow starts with a sound mesh, a usable release direction, and printable clearance around the cavity.

Begin with a correctly scaled mesh and inspect it for open edges, duplicate shells, and thin details. A mold generator can create printable geometry, but it cannot choose a safe release direction for a model with hidden undercuts.

Choose the mold type from the object’s shape: a simple two-part mold for a clear split plane, a tray for repeated shallow cavities, or a core-based workflow for hollow open forms. Set wall thickness and clearance for the material and printer you will actually use.

Preview the cavity, registration features, and pour opening before exporting. Print a small section or test mold when fit and release matter, then adjust the design rather than relying on a full production run as the first test.
